Brent Bates
L. Brent Bates moved to Kerrville in October of 1991, with his
wife, Margaret, and his baby daughter. He formed Bates Total Asset Management
and provided a comprehensive list of financial services including securities
brokerage, insurance, real estate brokerage and fee advisory services. His work
history in financial services dates back to 1982, when he worked as a
stockbroker for Merrill Lynch at the age of 24. During his time in Kerrville,Mr. Bates held numerous securities
and insurance licenses, along with professional designations such as Certified
Financial Planner®, Chartered Life Underwriter®, and Chartered Financial
Consultant®.
In 2002, with his financial services business established and growing, Mr. Bates purchased 10 acres on Water Street in Kerrville, Texas to construct an office complex in which he could locate his financial planning and management practice. Being an Aggie, he developed 80,000 square feet of office space, when his personal need was only 4,000 square feet. With the extra space he created an innovative way to "condo" professional office space in Kerrville that has been very successful and copied by other developers. He then realized that he enjoyed real estate development and watching his vision become a reality.
Mr. Bates' real estate experience dates back to 1985, when he received his real estate agent's license in Fort Worth, Texas. While there, he dealt with many of Fort Worth's larger developers which imparted to him the skills and tenacity he now uses as a professional developer.
Not long after his foray into development, Mr. Bates' keen observations of history told him that it was time to retire from the financial services industry. Due to the long-term viability of the markets he expected several decades of under performance in his investment class, so in 2003, he divested himself of Bates Total Asset Management and begun developing real estate full-time.
With some of his existing clients he began developing River Guide Village, which has become a model for Mr. Bates' newest venture, developing a series of state-of-the-art Cancer Centers located in smaller communities around Texas. The first of these was the Hill Country Center for Cancer Care located in the River Guide Village in Kerrville; his second to be completed Jan. 2009 is the Lost Pines Center for Cancer Care in Bastrop.
While in Kerrville, he has participated in numerous organizations from President of the Kerrville Little League to Treasurer of the Hill Country Youth Soccer Association. He has been on the board of the Hill Country Youth Ranch, a home for abused children, for 14 years, and previously held the position of Board President. Mr. Bates is also on the board of a local charter school and he is very active in the Fredericksburg Bible Church.
He is also an avid hunter, fishermen and outdoorsman. His teenage daughters Effie and Olivia, are both very active in athletics and are the recipients of numerous academic awards. He believes one of the best things about his daughters is that they inherited their mother's good looks.
